Vault Sculptures
I made these cast iron vaults while attending an iron pour at East Carolina University hosted by Prof. Carl Billingsley. The U.N. Peacekeeper helmets I discovered in the window of an army surplus while walking down 42nd St. some time after the vaults were cast. The combination was at first a visual impulse, but it had obvious political commentary that seems to be perpetually relevant.
The United Nations peacekeeping forces are often under fire as they are placed in areas of armed conflict. The delicate nature of the work, however, often precludes them from shooting back thereby restricting their efforts. They are in effect an army perpetually limited and bound by politics.
